Bathroom Lighting Upgrade in Lebanon, PA: From Flickering Cans to LED Wafer Lights

Sometimes the most appreciated work we do is not the most complicated. When we visited Roz in Lebanon, PA recently, we took care of several small repairs around her home. But the project she kept coming back to — the one that made a genuine difference in her daily life — was updating the lighting above her bathroom vanity.

What She Was Living With

Roz had three older recessed can lights installed above her vanity. Over time, the trim springs had weakened to the point where the trims would no longer stay in place. The bulb connections had become unreliable, causing the lights to flicker — an ongoing annoyance that made the bathroom feel poorly lit and a little unsettled. And every time a bulb needed replacing, she had to deal with the inconvenience of climbing up to reach them, wrestling with connections that did not cooperate, and coaxing the trims back into position.

It was the kind of problem that had gone on long enough that it had just become part of the routine. We were glad to put an end to it.

What We Did

We removed the three old recessed cans entirely and replaced them with 6-inch LED wafer lights. Wafer lights — sometimes called slim or ultra-thin recessed lights — are a significant upgrade over traditional can fixtures. They mount flush against the ceiling using integrated clips, eliminating the trim and spring assembly that had been causing Roz’s problems. There are no separate trim pieces to fall, no deep housing to reach into, and no exposed bulb socket to cause connection issues.

Before we finished, we took a few minutes to go through the available color temperature settings with Roz. Bathroom lighting is personal — some people prefer a warmer, softer tone, while others want something closer to daylight for tasks like applying makeup or shaving. We found the color temperature she liked best and locked it in. The lights are also fully dimmable, so she has control over the brightness depending on the time of day or what she is doing.

The Result

Roz was genuinely thrilled. No more flickering. No more trims dropping. No more standing on a step stool to coax a bulb into making contact. The bathroom is well-lit, the light quality suits her preferences, and the whole installation looks clean and finished. It is a straightforward upgrade on paper, but the difference it makes in everyday comfort is real.

That is the kind of outcome we work toward on every job — not just a task completed, but a home that functions better for the person living in it. If you have lighting in your home that has been bothering you, we are glad to help. Call Mid Penn Electric at (717) 287-4008.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can LED wafer lights replace old recessed can lights?

Yes. LED wafer lights are designed to install directly into an existing ceiling cutout, making them a straightforward replacement for older recessed cans. They eliminate the deep housing, exposed trim springs, and separate bulb socket of traditional can fixtures, which removes the most common points of failure. The result is a cleaner, slimmer installation that is far less prone to the problems older cans develop over time.

What color temperature is best for bathroom lighting?

It depends on how the bathroom is used. For task lighting — applying makeup, grooming, or anything requiring accurate color rendering — a cooler white in the range of 3000K to 4000K is generally preferred because it closely resembles natural daylight. For a warmer, more relaxing atmosphere, 2700K produces a softer, incandescent-like tone. Many homeowners appreciate having dimmable lights so they can adjust the mood throughout the day.

How long do LED wafer lights last compared to traditional bulbs?

Quality LED wafer lights are rated for 25,000 to 50,000 hours of use — roughly 20 to 50 times longer than incandescent bulbs and significantly longer than most CFL bulbs. For a bathroom light used a few hours per day, that translates to decades of reliable service without the ongoing hassle of bulb replacement. They also consume a fraction of the energy of traditional incandescent fixtures.
