Rewiring an Above-Ground Pool in Hershey, PA: Safety, GFCI Protection & Bonding

When summer hits Central PA, there’s nothing better than cooling off in your own backyard pool. But behind every safe and functional above-ground swimming pool is an electrical system designed to protect your home and family.

This week, our team at Mid Penn Electric completed a rewiring project for an above-ground pool in Hershey, PA, and we want to share what goes into a safe, code-compliant pool setup.

🛠 The Project: Upgrading an Aging Pool Setup

The homeowner contacted us after their pool pump began tripping the breaker — especially after rain or humid days. Our inspection revealed:

  • Undersized wiring
  • No GFCI protection
  • No bonding for the metal pool frame

We designed a full electrical upgrade to keep their pool running safely and efficiently all summer.

🔌 GFCI Protection: The First Line of Defense

We installed a dedicated 20-amp GFCI-protected circuit for the pool pump.

Why it matters:
GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) devices shut off power within milliseconds if electricity leaks — like into water. The NEC requires GFCI protection for:

  • Pool pumps
  • Lights
  • Heaters
  • Outlets near water

It’s not just code — it’s life-saving.

⏱ Pool Timer = Safety + Savings

We also installed a digital pool timer that controls when the pump runs.

Benefits of a pool timer:

  • Keeps water circulating consistently
  • Saves energy by preventing 24/7 pump use
  • Simplifies daily operation

🔩 Bonding: The Overlooked but Critical Safety Step

One crucial (and often missed) part of pool wiring is electrical bonding. We bonded:

  • The metal pool frame
  • The ladder
  • Other metallic components

Why bonding matters:
Bonding connects all metal parts to equalize voltage — preventing shocks. It’s especially important near water where multiple metal objects may be touched at once.

✅ The Result: A Safer, Code-Compliant Pool

After the job was complete, the homeowner had:

  • A GFCI-protected circuit
  • An automatic pool timer
  • A fully bonded pool frame
  • A system compliant with National Electrical Code

And most importantly — peace of mind.
