Home Additions and Renovation Electrical

A home addition or major renovation is one of the best opportunities to bring your home’s electrical system fully up to current standards. When walls are open and a builder is already on-site, running new circuits, upgrading the panel, and installing modern protection is practical in a way it simply is not in a finished home. Mid Penn Electric works alongside builders and homeowners throughout Lebanon, Lancaster, and Dauphin counties to handle the electrical side of addition and renovation projects from start to finish.

What We Handle on Addition and Renovation Projects

Our renovation and addition work typically includes new service installation or panel upgrades to support the expanded home, wiring for all new rooms and spaces, AFCI protection on all applicable circuits, lighting installation including LED wafer lights and fixtures, ceiling fan wiring, smart switch installation, kitchen and bathroom electrical, smoke and carbon monoxide detector systems, and generator interlock installation. We coordinate closely with the general contractor to keep the project on schedule.

One of our most involved recent projects was a second-story addition in Elizabethtown, PA — a two-bedroom ranch transformed into a six-bedroom home for a growing family. Working with Penryn Builders, we installed a new 200-amp service, rewired the entire home, and handled everything from LED lighting in every closet to a generator interlock for their backup generator.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I bring an electrician into a renovation project?

As early as possible — ideally during the planning phase, before framing begins. Early involvement allows us to coordinate with the builder on panel location, circuit routing, and rough-in timing, which saves time and avoids conflicts with other trades. Waiting until late in a project often means more disruption and higher cost.

Does adding a room or addition require upgrading my electrical panel?

Not always, but often. It depends on your current panel’s capacity and what the new space will require. A bedroom addition with basic lighting and outlets may fit within existing capacity. A kitchen addition, an in-law suite, or a second story with multiple rooms typically requires additional circuits that a full panel may not have room for. We assess this at the start of every project and give you an honest recommendation.

What electrical code requirements apply to a home addition in Pennsylvania?

Home additions in Pennsylvania are required to meet current NEC requirements, which include AFCI protection on most 120-volt circuits in living spaces, GFCI protection in kitchens, bathrooms, and other specified locations, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in all sleeping areas and on every level, and proper grounding and bonding throughout. Work requires permits and inspections. We handle the permit process and ensure all work is done to a standard that passes inspection.
